California voters have snuffed out a referendum that would have legalized marijuana in the state.

If the ballot measure had been approved, California would have been the first state to legalize marijuana, putting it at odds with the federal government. Last month Attorney General Eric Holder had pledged to “vigorously enforce” federal drug laws if the measure had passed.

The Los Angeles Times, Reuters and the Associated Press have stories.

Reuters quoted a San Francisco paralegal, Elaine Ricci, who supported legalized marijuana but opposed the California referendum. “The legalization of marijuana I approve of but my only issue is that the federal government won’t recognize what the state of California does,” Ricci said. “So I wish we could go to the federal level on that instead of just the state level.”
