California Governor Signs Law Protecting Circumcision
California cities won’t be allowed to ban circumcisions under a law signed Sunday by Gov. Jerry Brown.
Lawmakers passed the measure after a San Francisco ballot proposal said circumcision should be stopped because it is a “painful and damaging surgery to an unwilling patient,” the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
A San Francisco judge ruled in late July that the measure could not appear on the ballot because it was pre-empted by state law concerning medical procedures and it served no legitimate purpose, according to the Chronicle and the New York Times.
