Calif. Goes on Prison Spending Spree
California has approved $8.3 billion to build new prisons, the biggest prison building program in the nation’s history, the New York Times reports.
Under the plan, California will add 53,000 prison beds and send 8,000 prisoners to other states.
The state had faced a May court deadline to develop a plan to relieve prison overcrowding or face a federal takeover.
