Boalt Hall Law School Gets New Name
The University of California at Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law has settled on a new name.
In January it will officially become the UC Berkeley School of Law, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
School officials paid a consulting firm $25,000 for a branding consultant to interview students and others about changing the name.
The money was well-spent, says Dean Christopher Edley Jr. Too many people were confused by the old name, he told the Chronicle. “I view this not as a new name but as a way to remedy the confusion about the relationship between Berkeley, Boalt and UC Berkeley,” he said.
News of the plan to change the name prompted a naming contest on Abovethelaw.com and a Question of the Week on ABAJournal.com asking readers how they would rename their law schools.
A hat tip to the Wall Street Journal Law Blog, which posted the Chronicle article.
