Barnes & Thornburg is eliminating its summer associate program in Chicago, at least for next year, because it’s now so easy to hire first-year associates.

The 450-lawyer Indianapolis-based law firm “typically has about two to three summer associates in the Chicago office,” offering successful tryoutsfirst-year associate jobd starting the fall after they graduate from law school, the National Law Journal reports. But lately, the 75-lawyer Chicago office has had no difficulty hiring associates outside of its summer program, and having to wait perhaps 18 months for a summer associate to graduate and return to work is a disadvantage.

The law firm’s other offices will continue to hire summer associates.
