Ballard Spahr chairman Mark Stewart never expected that his role would include announcing a reward for information on the shooting of an associate.

But now he’s telling the news media that his firm will pay $10,000 for information on the shooting of 37-year-old associate Spencer Hill, who was shot Monday evening in West Philadelphia on his way home from work. Hill, a commercial litigator, survived after he was shot in the stomach in what might have been a bungled robbery attempt, report the Philadelphia Tribune, Philly.com and the Legal Intelligencer.

“He’s just a hard-working successful lawyer who spends a large amount of time doing pro bono work trying to make the lives of people in Philadelphia and the state who need advocates and advocacy better,” Stewart told the Philadelphia Tribune. “He’s just a good guy trying to make people’s lives better and then this. Shot.”

Stewart said Hill’s shooting is the second time in a year that a Ballard Spahr associate has been the victim of a violent crime in Philadelphia. “So, we asked, ‘What can we do?’ ” Stewart told Philly.com.

Hill spent three nights in the hospital after the shooting. Doctors decided against removing the bullet.

Hill said he was shot in front of his home by a man who had run up behind him. The man pulled the trigger after Hill turned around.

“I’m definitely blessed and I’m lucky,” Hill told the Philadelphia Tribune. “I don’t think a lot of things are coincidence. I was supposed to be there—and I was supposed to live through it.”
