Covered with burn scars on 80 percent of her body, Audrey Mabrey could easily feel sorry for herself.

But at 28 she considers herself “the new Audrey,” whose prayer—to live and raise her children—while she was doused with gasoline and set on fire at her Florida home several years ago, was answered, the St. Petersburg Times reports. Her husband is charged with attempted murder and arson.

Although it took a while, she started looking in mirrors again when she went home, after months in the hospital. Meanwhile, she volunteers, including as a speaker about domestic violence, and has won freedom, she says, with the help of a pro bono lawyer, who assisted her with a divorce filing, and the criminal justice system, where she attends hearings as a witness in the ongoing case against her husband.

“I choose to be happy. I didn’t die that day,” she writes in conclusion to the lengthy Times article. “What I learned was how to live.”
