A 1L at the University of Texas School of Law has an appropriate legal name.

The 1L is Atticus Finch, and it’s a name that he chose himself, the Texas Lawyer reports.

Finch was named Angus Finch until his lawyer parents allowed him to legally change his name to Atticus Finch when he was 8 years old.

Finch told the Texas Lawyer that he had read To Kill a Mockingbird at age 7 and was inspired by the fictional lawyer’s dedication to justice. He was also unhappy with his given name of Angus.

At the time, McDonald’s was promoting its Angus beef burger, and Finch had moved to a new school. “It wasn’t a good time to be a kid changing schools with a name of Angus in Texas,” he told the Texas Lawyer.

Finch’s parents had told him that they would consider allowing him to change his name to Atticus if he used it for a year without taking legal action. He kept up his end of the deal, and his parents did the necessary legal work.

Finch said he has taken some ribbing over the years about the name Atticus Finch. Now that he is in law school, “the jokes definitely got better,” he told the Texas Lawyer.
