Atlanta-based Smith, Gambrell & Russell and Chicago-based Freeborn & Peters have announced that they will combine in a merger effective March 1.

The new law firm will have nearly 400 lawyers in 14 offices and will use the Smith, Gambrell & Russell name, according to a Jan. 24 press release and Law.com.

The firm’s combined gross revenues are more than $260 million, which would place it at No. 132 in the 2022 Am Law 200 rankings.

The firms have “a shared strategic vision and complementary high-value, top-tier markets and practice areas,” the press release said.

Freeborn is the smaller firm with about 110 lawyers, according to Law.com. Its “deep litigation bench” will augment Chicago litigation capabilities Smith Gambrell added through its 2022 merger with Chicago litigation boutique Figliulo & Silverman, the press release said. Freeborn will gain from Smith Gambrell’s transactional and corporate expertise.

After the merger, the firm’s largest offices will be in Atlanta, Chicago and New York.
