Arrests Foil Attacks on U.S. Targets, Germany Says
Three suspected terrorists have been arrested and accused of plotting bomb attacks on U.S. targets in Germany.
German Federal Prosecutor Monika Harms said the men were targeting bars and other establishments frequented by Americans, the Associated Press reports. German media reported the targets included the Frankfurt International Airport and U.S. Ramstein Air Base.
Harms said the suspects had hidden about 1,500 pounds of hydrogen peroxide that they planned to use to make the bombs. The suspects, two Germans and a Turk, had allegedly trained at terrorist training camps in Pakistan run by the Islamic Jihad Union, a group said to be influenced by al-Qaida.
Bloomberg News quotes Harms as saying the arrests prevented the deaths of “many, many people,” foiling “one of the worst terror acts ever planned in Germany.”
