Usually a former U.S. attorney general has no trouble finding work at a prestigious law firm. But that’s not the case for Alberto Gonzales.

Friends have inquired whether any Washington law firms are interested in hiring Gonzales, but none of them have made an offer, sources told the New York Times.

Most of Gonzales’ current income comes from the lecture circuit. He was paid about $30,000 plus expenses for appearances at Washington University in St. Louis, Ohio State University and the University of Florida, the story says. Business groups pay a little more.

Gonzales’ spokesman is Robert Bork Jr., a communications specialist and the son of the failed Supreme Court nominee. He told the Times that Gonzales “is considering his opportunities in law and business” and is doing so carefully.

Gonzales resigned last August amid controversy over his role in the firing of nine U.S. attorneys and the truthfulness of his testimony before Congress about a secret wiretap program.
