Alabama Attorney General Troy King has sued BP and oil rig contractors despite the governor’s opposition to a suit.

Attorney General Troy King says he filed the suits because BP has broken too many promises about accepting responsibility for the Gulf oil spill, according to the Associated Press and the Press Register.

King said BP is retaining the best expert witnesses to prevent plaintiffs from hiring them and is selling assets to keep them out of the reach of American courts.

The state appears to be the first to sue BP, although some state pension funds have filed suit, the Press Register says.

According to the AP story, King will be out of office before the suit makes much progress. He lost the Republican primary on June 1.
