British authorities have arrested three journalists in an expanding investigation of phone-hacking allegedly by reporters with a popular tabloid.

On Thursday, police arrested a reporter with The News of the World, on suspicion of unlawfully intercepting mobile phone messages.

The journalist was questioned and released, without any charges being filed, the New York Times reports.

This follows the arrest last week of two other journalists from the tabloid, which the Times notes is one of the most widely circulated in Britain.

At the center of the investigation are scores of voice mail accounts hacked purportedly by reporters and investigators working for the Rupert Murdoch-owned publication.

The Times, which observes that the latest arrests mark a “potentially decisive turning point” in the 5-year-old investigation, notes that many of the accounts belonged to British royalty and international celebrities, including Prince William and Prince Harry.
