10 Questions Live: Keith Porcaro talks about how tech can make it easier to deliver legal services
Keith Porcaro is a web developer-turned-lawyer devising innovative, technology-driven processes to streamline the delivery of government and social services.
On Thursday, he talked to the ABA about how his work as head of technology and development and general counsel of SIMLab in Washington, D.C., has helped social service providers with intake.
“How does somebody not just kind of get the one service that they might be looking for, but the three or four or five services that they might actually need?” Porcaro asks. “So, like, if I lost my job, chances are I’d probably need more than just assistance finding a job. I might also need rental assistance and food assistance and utility assistance, and all of this network web of services that may be provided by different providers.”
Intake forms should be able to be used to make social services explorable, Porcaro says. “When someone goes and tries to find help, we can use it as an opportunity to teach somebody about how to navigate the system.”
