PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSTITUTION, BYLAWS AND HOUSE RULES OF PROCEDURE

Proposed amendments to the Constitution, Bylaws and House Rules of Procedure of the American Bar Association summarized below have been duly filed with the Secretary of the Association by the indicated sponsoring members of the Association for consideration by the House of Delegates at the 2012 Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

Copies of the full text of these proposals will be published in the book of resolutions to the House of Delegates and are also available on the ABA’s website on the House of Delegates Leadership Page (click on Summary of Resolutions). These proposals are also available to any member upon request to the Division for Policy Administration at the American Bar Association, 321 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60654; 312/988-5230.

Notice is hereby given that Edward Haskins Jacobs proposes to amend § 1.2 of the Constitution to include the following language as one of the purposes of the Association: “to defend the right to life of all innocent human beings, including all those conceived but not yet born.”

Notice is hereby given that Barbara J. Howard (principal sponsor), Joseph D. O’Connor, Patricia Lee Refo, Karol Corbin Walker, Tracy A. Giles, Jacqueline Parker, Palmer Gene Vance II, Hilarie Bass, Alan O. Olson, David B. Wolfe, and Sandra R. McCandless propose to amend Article 3 of the Constitution, and Article 21 and § 31.7 of the Bylaws regarding membership issues.

Notice is hereby given that Laura V. Farber (principal sponsor), Commander Benes Z. Aldana, Dennis W. Archer, Michelle A. Behnke, Hon. Pamila J. Brown, Marvin S.C. Dang, Joseph A. DeWoskin, Colonel James M. Durant III, William T. Hogan III, Kathleen J. Hopkins, Barbara J. Howard, George C. Johnson, Karen J. Mathis, Amy Lin Meyerson, Patricia Lee Refo, Harvey B. Rubenstein, Jennifer A. Rymell, Patricia A. Sexton, James R. Silkenat, and Dwight L. Smith propose to amend § 6.2(a)(5), § 6.7(g) and § 10.1(a) of the Constitution, to change the name of the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division to the Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division.

Notice is hereby given that Min K. Cho (principal sponsor), Elizabeth K. Acee, Kelly-Anne Clarke, Michael Pellicciotti, Ethan Tidmore, and David B. Wolfe propose to amend § 6.4(a) of the Constitution to change the requirement that if the bar associations of a state are entitled to four or more delegates, at least one delegate must have been admitted to practice in his or her first bar within the past five years, or must be less than 36 years old.

Notice is hereby given that J. Anthony (Tony) Patterson, Jr. (principal sponsor), M. Joe Crosthwait, Jr., Sharon Stern Gerstman, Estelle H. Rogers, Mark I. Schickman, and Ginger Busby propose to amend § 31.7 of the Association’s Bylaws to eliminate the Standing Committee on Substance Abuse.

Notice is hereby given that Palmer Gene Vance II (Principal Sponsor), Alice A. Bruno, Nathaniel Cade, Jr., Tracy A. Giles, and Mary T. Torres propose to amend § 42.6 of the Rules of Procedure of the House of Delegates to provide that the 11th Edition of Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised shall govern the House in parliamentary situations that are not covered by the Constitution, the Bylaws or the House Rules.

ABE ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS

The annual meeting of members of the American Bar Endowment will be held in conjunction with the ABA Annual Meeting on Monday, August 6, 2012, at 8:45 A.M. in the Grand Ballroom, Gold Level, East Tower, of the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The purpose of this meeting is: (1) to elect two members to the Board of Directors for a term of five years and (2) to transact such other business that may properly come before the meeting. All members of the American Bar Association are members of the American Bar Endowment.
