In April 2013, New York City and the owners of Zuccotti Park agreed to pay more than $230,000 in a settlement to the Occupy Wall Street group for the destruction of what the group called “the People’s Library,” the Associated Press reported.

The Occupy group had assembled 3,600 books in the park. On Nov. 15, 2011, these were seized by the police and destroyed during a raid of the Manhattan park where the group had gathered to protest income inequality, the AP reports. The Occupy group filed suit alleging that this violated their constitutional rights.

“Sometimes cases are settled to avoid drawn-out litigation that bolsters plaintiff attorney fees,” a spokeswoman for the city’s law department told the AP.
