Judge Samuel D. McReynolds, who presided over Johnson’s trial, sent Johnson to Nashville, Tenn., for safekeeping when mobs made several attempts to lynch him. Despite a dozen witnesses who testified Johnson had been elsewhere at the time of the attack, Johnson was convicted on Feb. 9, 1906, and sentenced by McReynolds to death.
