Portsmouth (Virginia) Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Morales was reelected to top prosecutor in November 2017, with 63% of the vote, after winning the post during a 2015 special election. The 33-year-old promised a progressive criminal justice reform platform, and in April announced her office will no longer prosecute cases of misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Notable: Morales is one of the few prosecutors across the country to take a police officer to trial, and win, for the shooting of an unarmed black victim, in 2016. She was recently appointed special prosecutor to review another police-involved shooting death of an unarmed black woman in a neighboring Virginia county.
