Caption: The first “Trial of the [20th] Century” was the trial of millionaire Harry Thaw for the 1906 murder of architect Stanford White for White’s part in “ruining” Evelyn Nesbit. Nesbit was one of a bevy of beautiful models White engaged for his artistic pursuits. Stanford was fatally shot during a performance at the Rooftop Theatre of Madison Square Gardens, a structure he designed. Evelyn was known as “the girl on the red velvet swing” for her antics on the red velvet swing hanging in White’s apartments.
