Prior to Clarence Saunders opening the first Piggly Wiggly in Memphis in 1916, Americans shopped at grocery stores in which they would hand a shopping list to a store clerk to fill from behind a counter. The modern self-serve style of shopping for groceries, toiletries and household items had not been developed when the first issue of the ABA Journal was published.
