After prevailing in one of the closest presidential races in American history, Richard Nixon was sworn in as the 37th president of the United States. As he took the oath of office, Nixon was surrounded by his political enemies.
Administering the oath was one of his most hated rivals, Chief Justice Earl Warren. Nixon had also clashed with outgoing President Lyndon Johnson (standing behind Warren) and Vice President Hubert Humphrey (standing behind Nixon), his opponent in 1968.
Nixon had a happier time during the inaugural parade, when he was treated to loud cheers after passing the Washington, D.C., office of his now-former law firm.
