Both cases challenge Trump administration rollbacks of corporate fuel economy standards and greenhouse gas emission standards for passenger vehicles. In September, California, along with 23 other states, the District of Columbia, New York City and Los Angeles filed a lawsuit in federal district court in the District of Columbia against Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The states asserted that the rollback exceeded NHTSA’s authority and that the agency failed to consider environmental impacts as required by the National Environmental Policy Act. Nine nonprofit organizations filed a similar lawsuit.
