Susan Smith was one of Clarke’s first high-profile clients. Found guilty of killing her two sons, she was facing the death penalty. Clarke asked that her life be spared. “She made a terrible decision with a confused mind and a heart without hope,” Clarke told the jury. “Hopelessness is not malice.” Smith received life in prison rather than the death penalty.
