A minister’s wife from Elizabethtown, N.J., Hannah Ogden Caldwell was killed during the Revolutionary War, probably by a British soldier’s stray shot, according to the New Jersey Journal (PDF). Now her ghost is said to haunt the grounds of the cemetery and the corridors of the Union County Courthouse in Elizabethtown, now known as Elizabeth.
When the Sci-Fi channel show ‘Ghost Hunters’ went to investigate the rumors in 2009, the Star-Ledger said that courthouse workers had plenty of sightings to report. Union County Sheriff Ralph Froehlich recounted a story a maintenance man told him about seeing a ghostly figure in the cemetery. “He wasn’t a person who would have delusions,” the sheriff said. “He was reliable. He had a responsible position here. If Duke told me something, I would believe it.”
