Sometimes the lack of a prenup is what makes news. In January, billionaires Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos announced that they were divorcing after 25 years of marriage. Headlines soon turned to one outstanding fact about the end of their romance—the couple didn’t sign a prenup, according to TMZ. Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, is currently the richest person in the world with a net worth of more than $135 billion, according to Forbes. MacKenzie Bezos owns approximately 16 percent of Amazon and is an award-winning novelist, reports the New York Times. The two were married before Amazon.com was established, and together, they resided primarily in Washington state, which has community property laws. This means that without a prenup (or even a postnuptial agreement), MacKenzie Bezos would become the fifth-richest person in the world, with a net worth of more than $68 billion, Forbes reports.
