U.S. attorney general from 1969 to ’72. Former law partner of Nixon’s. Resigned in 1972 to head Committee for the Re-Election of the President. Approved use of $250,000 from secret campaign fund to pay for the Watergate break-in. Convicted in 1975 of conspiracy, obstruction of justice and perjury for lying to a grand jury.
