At just 19, Van Houten was the youngest follower of ’60s cult leader Charles Manson. According to The Illustrated Courtroom: 50 Years of Court Art by Elizabeth Williams and Sue Russell, Van Houten was described by a police psychologist as a “spoiled little princess.” She also told a police sergeant that “you couldn’t meet a nicer group than the [Manson] Family.”
While Van Houten did not take part in a murder spree in which five people were killed on Aug. 9, 1969, she was an active participant in the deaths of supermarket magnate Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, the following night.
The graphic imagery that came out during the trial wore on artist Bill Robles, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from his work.
“I was just a young guy and it took its toll because I ate, slept and drank the case. I developed a stomach problem, but it was all nerves,” he said.
