Social Media Is Now An Institution…Are You Committed?
Why Informational Posts, Tweets, and Shares Can Be Critical
Here is a case where an insanity defense isn’t needed – it’s for the use of social media during times of crisis or national interest. Providing helpful information can be critical to your law firm, and in some cases, truly aid the public, depending upon the situation.
As a lawyer, do you want to quickly comment on an explosive case ruling? Or send your clients and potential clients a link to an interesting article? Social Media enables you to be a thought leader in literally seconds.
And conversations are getting shorter, which means you have to communicate your point more succinctly and effectively.
The masses turn to social media for their news because it can be delivered in bite-size snippets; what was once thought of as a non-viable form of media is fast becoming a real-time reporter of crucial information.
In the instance of the recent devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma, social media may have been a lifesaver of sorts. Those in the affected areas were tweeting and retweeting images of the storm, along with tracking alerts from the National Weather Service Forecast office in Norman, OK. In fact, in a 2012 survey from the American Red Cross, 76 percent of dedicated social users during emergencies turned to social media for information about friends and family during a disaster.2
Is your firm active in social media? Take a moment to assess which social media channels you’re involved with and contribute to on a daily or weekly basis. Do you have a profile on LinkedIn®, a Twitter® account, a Facebook® page, or a blog?
Bolstering your social media presence can increase your visibility and demonstrate your thought leadership on topics that relate to your areas of practice. And adding social media icons and feeds to your website will broaden your audience reach.
It’s all about providing value with information that is useful. Given its increasing impact, it may be a good time to add it to your marketing mix.
