Attorneys are well aware that, to be able to run a successful law practice, they need to be able to complete their billing in a timely and efficient manner.

Recently, the latest Transformers movie has released to theaters. It is interesting to note that, in several ways, Firm Central Time & Billing is similar to the Transformers.

Just as the Transformers can ostensibly appear as mundane vehicles (cars, semis, etc.) but are actually much more complex, Firm Central Time & Billing offers both a user-friendly interface and a great deal of complexity that can be utilized, if needed.

You could say there is “more than meets the eye” when it comes to Firm Central Time & Billing!

In particular, three items warrant discussion: time and expense entry, invoicing, and applying payments.

Time & Expense Entry

Being able to enter time and expenses into a billing system quickly and efficiently is of vital importance to any attorney, paralegal, or office staff.

Put another way, time spent entering billable hours into a billing system is – in effect – time expended that the attorney cannot recover.

In Firm Central Time & Billing, users can enter time and expenses in several different ways:

• From the primary Time Entry / Expense Entry screen.

• Via a timer that the user can activate upon receiving a phone call or otherwise commencing their work.

• Through a widget on the page for their matter/case.

In addition, Firm Central Time & Billing streamlines the process of entering time and expenses. Users can type a description of the work they performed for a particular client and matter.

Or, alternatively, the user can select from a list of activity codes (including ABA activity codes provided). The user is permitted to transform those activity codes by entering their own codes into the system.

This ability is invaluable for attorneys who wish to customize and streamline how they wish to enter their time and expenses.

Professional Invoicing

When creating an invoice in Firm Central Time & Billing, a user is provided several options to choose from. The user can utilize the standard invoice format provided by the program, which will suffice for many billing situations. However, invoices can be customized in Time & Billing. If desired, a user can transform their invoices by creating their own invoice template.

The options for creating an invoice template are extensive – the user can choose to include a remittance slip, account summary, trust balance information, firm logo, firm website, and much more in their invoice.

Applying Payments

As important as entering time and expenses and creating invoices is the process of recording payments an attorney receives from the client.

Applying payments in Firm Central Time & Billing is easy and straightforward. The Time & Billing page offers a simple panel for entering a payment by simply entering an invoice number, amount, and payment type.

Alternatively, a customer can click into an invoice to display a copy of the invoice (for printing or downloading) and then enter a payment towards that invoice.

However, if a user wishes to apply a payment towards multiple invoices, he/she can select multiple invoices, and choose how much they wish to apply to each invoice. Or, the user can simply have Firm Central Time & Billing “auto distribute” the payment for them! Doing so will result in the oldest outstanding invoice being paid first.
