Cornell Law School and India-based Jindal Global Law school announced a new collaborative initiative between the schools that includes faculty and student exchange programs and joint teaching and research initiatives.

“The signing of the [agreement] and establishment of a deep and pervasive collaboration with Cornell Law School marks a significant step in our effort to promote global legal education in India,” said Jindal Global Law School dean C. Raj Kumar in a statement.

Although it is becoming more common for U.S. law schools to partner with foreign institutions to sponsor international programs, research projects and conferences, the debate of whether to accredit foreign law schools and potentially enable their graduates to practice law in the U.S. remains divisive.

In June of 2008, the Peking University of Transnational Law announced its intention to seek accreditation from the ABA. However, the Council of the ABA’s Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar put off a decision on whether to accredit foreign law schools in December, saying the matter needs more study.
