A Virginia lawyer injured by someone who apparently fired shots through the window of his law office was working remotely on Wednesday, keeping in touch with a computer, cell phone and BlackBerry.

The lawyer, Todd Sanders, spoke with the ABA Journal but cautioned he couldn’t talk about the incident because he is a witness in the case.

“I can tell you that I’m fine and that I will be back to work soon,” said Sanders, a former prosecutor who primarily represents criminal defendants accused of crimes ranging from drunken driving to major felonies. He is also an adjunct professor who teaches a fall semester class on trial advocacy at George Washington University Law School.

“I’m concerned, but I can’t let it stop me from working and taking care of the things I need to take care of,” he said. “I’m cooperating with law enforcement.”

Sanders was at his office in downturn Leesburg Monday evening at about 6:30 p.m. when he heard a knock at the door downstairs, the Loudoun Extra reports. He didn’t see someone there, but was then shot by someone possibly firing through a window in the back door, a source told publication. It wasn’t clear whether Sanders was injured by the shots or broken glass, according to early reports. He was hit in the head and neck.

Police told the Loudoun Extra they were seeking a “person of interest” who used a pay phone at a nearby Safeway store an hour or so before the shooting, but did not explain why.

Sanders was treated and released at the hospital on Monday evening. “No bullet or metal penetrated my skull,” he said.

Sanders says he appreciates the outpouring of support from friends, family and the legal community. “The support has just really lifted me,” he said.

“Nothing even close to this has ever happened to me. It’s definitely a new experience.”
