Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan added lawyers last year and boosted its profits per partner by 16 percent.

Quinn Emanuel reported 2010 profits per partner of $3.62 million, the Am Law Daily reports. The law firm still trails Wachtell, Lipson, Rosen & Katz, which reported $4.3 million in profits per partner in 2009, but “it’s narrowing the gap,” the Am Law Daily says.

Quinn Emanuel managed to boost its profits per partner as it added lawyers, going from 398 lawyers in 2009 to 489 in 2010. Name partner William Urquhart told the Am Law Daily that the firm is continuing to hire associates “as quickly as we can.”

Urquhart credits the profit numbers in large part to its profitable intellectual property cases. “The practice is off the charts,” Urquhart said.
