The city of Newark, N.J., is only a short distance by train from New York City. But in past decades, many businesses and individuals were reluctant to work in the state’s biggest city, often citing crime concerns.

That attitude has already begun to change, however, and is likely to change more, predicts an article in the New Jersey Law Journal.

A growing number of lawyers work in Newark, and among the latest additions are the 42 attorneys at Genova Burns & Vernoia, who moved from Livingston to Newark last month. Although many New York and Philadelphia law firms have opened Newark offices during the past 15 years, this is the first time in that period a homegrown suburban firm has shifted to the state’s big city, the legal publication reports.

Says managing partner Jim Burns: “A growing, expanding firm needs to go where the action is. The talent pool lives in cities—Hoboken, Jersey City, New York and someday maybe even Newark.”
