A rapidly growing law firm with longstanding roots in Richmond, Virginia, is expanding its footprint in the Southeast.

LeClairRyan announced this week that it is opening an Atlanta office with two partners from Troutman Sanders. The 380-attorney LeClairRyan also recently opened offices in Sacramento, California, and Houston, Texas, notes the Daily Report (sub. req.).

“It was a great opportunity to do something we’ve never done before—open a new office for a dynamic firm with a great strategy,” said partner John Hutchins, who will be in charge of the new Atlanta office. It is currently operating out of temporary space as LeClaireRyan mulls its options.

Chief executive officer David Freinberg said LeClairRyan anticipates further growth, both in Atlanta and elsewhere.

Chris Wiech, the other partner from Troutman Sanders, said his new firm’s ability to tailor rates to the type of work a client needs was a plus factor for him.

“Historically the law firm model is to say, ‘This is what we charge. What work do you have that warrants our rate?’” he told the Daily Report.

Freinberg said cost-control, including keeping a close eye on law firm rent, makes it possible for the firm to keep its rates competitive. In its new leases, he noted, the firm is looking for offices that all are the same size, regardless of whether the occupant is a partner or an associate, and an overall set-up that offers good collaborative space.
