Job Offers to Summer Associates Dropped 33 Percent Last Year
A drop in summer associates hired last summer contributed to a 33 percent decline in full-time job offers, according to a survey of large law firms.
The American Lawyer reports that 1,791 summer associates got job offers last year, compared to 2,679 the year before. The statistics are from 79 law firms that responded to the magazine’s survey.
In raw numbers, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom led the pack for fewer offers, extending job offers to 71 summer associates, compared to 207 the prior year. The firm with the biggest percentage drop was Cravath, Swaine & Moore, which extended 81 percent fewer job offers.
While law firms hired fewer summer associates last year, their offer rates increased overall, according to statistics by NALP, formerly the National Association for Law Placement. The percentage of summer associates offered full-time jobs rebounded to 87.4 percent in 2010 after plunging to 69.3 percent in 2009.
