ABA Board of Governors moves 2021 midyear meeting to Chicago

The ABA Board of Governors voted on Friday to move its 2021 Midyear Meeting from Orlando to Chicago, citing economic reasons.
ABA President Bob Carlson said in a statement released after the vote that the ABA chose Chicago after evaluating 18 cities. The association’s headquarters are located in the city. The meeting will take place February 10-15, 2021.
The decision to move the meeting from Orlando to Chicago will result in more than $1 million savings in travel and expenses for ABA staff and members who attend the meeting.
Contracts were signed with Orlando hotels years ago when the Midyear Meeting had a larger footprint. Holding the meeting in Orlando would have bound the ABA to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars more in food and beverage fees than necessary.
The Board had also considered moving the 2021 Midyear Meeting to Atlanta, prompting 243 ABA members to sign a letter released on Tuesday urging the Board not to select Atlanta as an alternate site in light of the recent abortion law adopted in Georgia.
