Queen Lili’uokalani inherited the throne from her brother, King David Kalākaua, several years after he signed the “Bayonet Constitution” in 1887.
Lili’uokalani’s intention was to write a new constitution that would restore the powers lost to the monarchy, but Bayonet backers foiled her plan.
