The title of Paul Levine’s Supreme Court novel is drawn from Oliver Wendell Holmes’s reputed reference to the justices as “nine scorpions in a bottle.” Like Meltzer, Levine’s story also has a law clerk, but the author spiced things up by making her a former stripper-turned-legal scholar. Levine has another high-court connection: He co-created the 2002 CBS television drama about the court, First Monday.
